Educational Tour

According to Francis Bacon, travelling is a part of education. Educational tours are a crucial component of the academic program because they give students the chance to learn outside the classroom and assist them to gain useful practical experience. There is a proverb that goes, “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I comprehend” and it refers to the idea that seeing something being done in a certain location helps people remember it better.

As a part of the curriculum, the academic departments of the Government General Degree College, Keshiary namely the departments of Anthropology, Bengali, Botany, History and Zoology organise educational tours to expose its students to on-field experiences. The tours include one-day trips to various landmark sites of West Bengal like Botanical Garden, Botanical Nurseries, Indian Museum, Mogolmari Archaeological site, Naya (Village of Painters), Zoological Garden Alipore, Langa Mara Forest Range etc. to fulfil the diverse requirements of the curriculum of the Vidyasagar University. The department of Anthropology has conducted a week- long educational excursion to Visva Bharati, Bolpur to study the socio-economic and cultural ethos of the tribal life of West Bengal. The department of Botany has a record of involvement in studying the floral diversity in their on-site educational tour visits to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Langa Mara Forest Range etc. and has studied plant breeding techniques in botanical nurseries. The department of Zoology has visited the Zoological Garden Alipore, Langa Mara Forest Range, Jhargram Mini Zoo etc. with its students for exploring the faunal diversities, in situ and ex situ. The department of Bengali has visited the Naya (Village of Painters) to experience the cottage industry based on folk art.

Educational tours can provide a learning experience which no formal classroom can accomplish. These tours assist them to experience their bookish- knowledge on-field so as to develop a practical idea about their teaching-learning curriculum. Besides, it helps students to explore unknown facts & provides immense happiness & a sense of satisfaction to them. We believe, theoretical learning may provide students an opportunity to apply their learning in hypothetical situations but an educational trip can help students implement their knowledge in real-life situations.
