National Service Scheme (NSS)

NSS units-1 of Government General Degree College, Keshiary was formed in the year 2017 under the coordination of the Vidyasagar University. Since its inception, the NSS Unit 1 of the college has remained actively engaged in diverse social service activities within and beyond the campus. The volunteers of the NSS Unit I of the college have delivered exemplary service in the frontiers of community engagement, awareness drive, clean and green campus initiatives, and selfless endeavours to reach and serve the society.

Aims and Objectives of NSS:

1. To understand the community in which they work;
2. To understand themselves in relation to their community;
3. To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in the problem solving process.
4. To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
5. To utilise their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;
6. To develop competence required for teamwork and sharing of responsibilities;
7. To gain skills in mobilising community participation;
8. To acquire leadership qualities and perceive democratic attitude;
9. To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters;
10. To practise national integration and social harmony

Mission:

The Motto of NSS “Not Me But You” reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. The insight gained through the selfless NSS activities enables a student to appreciate others’ opinions and manifest compassion for all living entities.

The NSS symbol is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Odisha. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind. The Red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The giant wheel of the Sun Temple portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signifies the progression in life across time and space.

Enrollment in NSS:

NSS is a voluntary service scheme. At college level, the NSS volunteers are enrolled from the first and second year students based on their urge and aptitude to serve the community. A NSS volunteer needs to devote a minimum of 240 hours of social service within two years of duration. Every year, a NSS volunteer has to devote 20 hours of orientation and 100 hours of community service.

Enrollment in NSS is free.

The NSS volunteers on successful completion of the required hours of service are awarded with a certificate. The certificate would be beneficial for the students who intend to get involved in higher studies and/or compete in certain job sectors.
