Environment Friendly Campus

1. Solar Powered Lights:

Government General Degree College, Keshiary supports the idea of sustainable green campus and perceives the idea of a carbon-neutral and pollution free campus. The college thus has installed solar powered lamp posts in its campus for illuminating the dark hours with non-conventional sources of energy.

2. Judicious use of conventional energy:

The college maintains a strict policy on conventional power use and cares are take on the following aspects:

  1. Students should be encouraged to use bicycles as personal mode of transport; use of personal vehicles should be discouraged.
  2. Notifications are displayed beside switches with instruction to switch-off electrical points when not in use;
  3. The air conditioning system must be restricted at 250 C or above to minimise energy consumption;
  4. Most of the lights are LED to reduce the power consumption.

3. Management of wastes:

The college has identified four different categories of wastes which are being managed strategically to minimise nuisance:

Types of waste Waste treatment and management
Biodegradable waste
  1. Aerobic composting is done to generate biofertilizer for the college garden.
  2. One side printed non-essential papers are re-used for internal communication.
  3. Internal circulars are communicated to the departments by emails and electronic media like WhatsApp etc.
  4. Pay-slips, office orders are generated and distributed via human resource management system thereby reducing paper waste.
Non-biodegradable waste
  1. The campus has been declared as a plastic-free zone.
  2. All the plastic wastes of the campus are accumulated in bins and periodically discarder by Block administration.
e-waste Electronic spares and damaged materials etc. are stored in a college storeroom and the college has the provision to write-off through Government tender for possible e-recycling
Laboratory refuges Diluted solutions are used instead of concentrated solutions in laboratories (as far as practicable)

Besides, properly planned sanitization and sewage measures are there in the building as designed by the Public Welfare department (PWD), Government of West Bengal. The toilet water is dispersed in the college garden for watering the plants. The message of recycling and waste reduction is periodically campaigned in and around the college campus by:

  1. Organising poster competition
  2. Organising seminars and popular lecture
  3. Organising rally and periodic campus cleaning drive involving students, teachers as well as the non-teaching staff

4. Management of water:

Government General Degree College, Keshiary values the concept of conservation of water. In harmony with the perception, the college has following water conservation facilities:

Water storage type with source of the water Water storage tank capacity Replenishing method
Rooftop rainwater storage tank Two tanks with 1000 lt capacity each Filled up by roof top rain water and overflow of the overhead tanks
Rainwater storage tank One tank with 10000 lt capacity Filled up by roof top rain water and overflow of the overhead tanks; regularly used for gardening and aquaculture
Natural waterbody (rain fed) One natural waterbody with approximate capacity of 500000 lt Filled up by rain during the monsoon months or any seasonal rain

Besides following measures have been adopted to counter judicious use of water in the campus:

  1. Water conservation and awareness programme are organised with the new students
  2. Overhead water storage tanks are filled periodically with close monitoring to avoid misuse.
  3. Closing of the taps after usage is practised and relevant notice are being displayed at water points
  4. Regular monitoring of the valves and outlet points in the water supply system is done to avoid overflow, leakage and spillage.
  5. The potable water points are fitted with push taps to save water

5. Green campus with rich biodiversity :

The college is situated in a lush green habitat of five acres of land which is a natural habitat of numerous plants (38 species of timber and fruit yielding trees and nearly 40 species of shrubs and medicinal herbs) and animals representing diverse taxonomic groups. The students, teaching and non-teaching staff of the college work shoulder to shoulder to convert once barren campus into a sustainable, environment-friendly green campus with its vibrant biodiversity having following notable specifications:

  1. The vegetation of the campus is well documented and even published as chapters in books
  2. A medicinal plant garden is maintained where different types of medicinal plants are maintained for the awareness of the stakeholders about rich bioresource of our country;
  3. The campus has a beautiful butterfly garden to promote the awareness of pollinators and plant-animal interaction;
  4. The campus is a natural residence of more than 30 different species of butterfly, several species of moths, beetles, other insects, fishes, reptiles, mammals etc. Besides, more than 25 different species of birds have been identified within the campus in past years.
  5. Tree Plantation Programme ‘Van Mahotsav’ is celebrated between 1st July to 7th July every year by NSS Unit 1 of the college where saplings collected from local administration are planted within the campus on that designated time and year round.
  6. As far as practicable the college campus is demarcated and maintained as ‘No plastic zone’.
  7. Properly labelled bins are placed at different corners of the college for collection/deposition of wastes.
