Introduction

The Department of Political Science of Government General Degree College, Keshiary was established during the 2015 session with an order of the Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal and the affiliation of Vidyasagar University. This department had one permanent faculty since 2015, Prof. Kalyashish Bhattacharya was the head of the department and after his transfer, Prof. Kaushik Das took charge of the department in May; 2023.

About the Department

This department offered Honours course since its inception and later on, a pass course was also offered since the 2018-19 session. Currently, the Department offers Honours as well as General degree course under CBCS model and NEP curriculum from the 2023 session. After the introduction of the NEP curriculum at the undergraduate level the students will learn different interdisciplinary courses such as disaster management, human rights, media and politics, gender studies, research methodology etc. apart from their regular courses such as political theory, Western and Indian political thought, International Relations, Indian Government and Politics, Indian Administration. The department encourages students to pursue postgraduate courses to broaden their expertise and compete in state and national administrative services exams. To do this, informative lectures along with ample study material have been provided to the students. Apart from that departmental teachers host class lectures, and discussions on current events apart from their regular classes.Through these activities, students can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the most recent global socio-political trends. Along with the traditional classroom setting, the department offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as youth parliaments, quiz competitions, and debates on current events and relevant subjects. Although this department has some constraints despite all this our students have been able to pursue higher education and sit for different competitive examinations.

The Department of Political Science offers students a solid foundation and a broader understanding of the discipline of Political Science. Our department attempts academic excellence in teaching, learning, research skill development and social values among the students, promotes interactive and participatory learning processes and sensitizes the students towards a community- oriented outlook, environmental and other social issues. Our department will open a Seminar Library in the department in near future and train our Students for different competitive examinations and professional courses.
